Candles.
Rose petals.
A video.
Lies.
Deceit.
And one proposal.

Kinda sounds like the blurb on a poster to the latest Hollywood movie, but it’s the essential ingredients to my proposal to Shte1! Here’s the long version:

It all started about a week before the night of the engagement, which ended up being Saturday the 13th of August. I had various ideas mulling about in my mind but nothing set in stone until some curious events occurred.

The weeks leading up to the 13th, Shte1 and I had planned a combined parents dinner in order for my parents to meet Steph’s parents and visa versa (the previous time our parents met was during my hospital emergency in April 2004). This dinner was moved ahead a week and went relatively well.

Then there was YF Pastoral Training was also scheduled on the 13th, which we intended to attend but ended up being cancelled for lack of numbers. Thus making me realise that a very opportune time to propose was coming up in very shortly!

So I made the decision on the Monday to get things into gear and propose. I borrowed Blanka’s digital camera and started filming various clips of me doing some silly and random things, as well as filming a mock interview explaining why I loved Shte1.

On Wednesday a brisk shopping spree with Tekken was necessary to find large candles so that I could set the mood. It was a bit of a task finding the candles as they seemed quite expensive in some places (up to $8-10 for tall candles). We eventually found what I wanted in Lincraft and stocked up (much to the somewhat sedated reactions to other customers – wouldn’t you find it weird for two Asian guys to be buy 15 plus candles of various shapes and sizes?).

So the video editing was coming along, thanks very much in part to the very fun program ‘Windows Movie Maker’, and the candles were bought. Rose petals would be sorted out on the day as it made little sense to by them prior as one would need to refrigerate them. All I needed now was to get Shte1 out of the house so that I could setup.

A bit of quick thinking was required for what was to follow. On the Monday night I spoke to Shte1 about coming around to supervise her Moore College correspondence course exam. She asked if I wanted to go over to Koorong in the afternoon, to which I hesitatingly agreed. At this point I thought I might be able to get FeiJei, Tekken’s girlfriend, to ask Shte1 if she wanted to go to Koorong whilst I went over to Tekken’s place to work on BLT music.

Sounds like a good plan? Well, when I told Shte1 that I was intending to go to Tek’s place to work on BLT music she also wanted to come and help. I, again, hesitatingly agreed in the hope that when FeiJei called Shte1 would agree to go. But no! Shte1 told FeiJei that she was helping Tekken and I…

After a small nervous breakdown, shared by FeiJei, I came up with a brilliant plan. I would tell Shte1 that what I was really doing at Tekken’s place was working on Tekken’s proposal to Fei! Thus I needed Shte1 to distract FeiJei!

Adding to the drama, I also got FeiJei to accept the offer to go to Koorong, but also suggest possibly hanging out with Tekken and I in the afternoon! Shte1 bought this hook line and sinker.

Tekken and I were able to set up the candles and so forth and I also got Tekken to drive my car down the street so that he could see their approach, but they could not see him.

As Shte1’s car pulled up I ran to take cover around a corner and listened intently for her entry. I heard FeiJei run into the toilet…and then nothing. Not a sound…not a whisper. What was going on?

A grunt from the garage came after about a minute’s worth of silence…FeiJei had gotten Shte1 to get all her shopping from the car! As she entered Shte1 called out to FeiJei to get her stuff…she turned and saw the candles and let out a little yelp :P

She followed the candles and rose petals into the room and the rest, as they say, is history… ;)
