Friday to Monday was spent away in the mountainous area of Murwilumbah (Gold Coast Hinterland) where 100+ people attended our annual YF Camp.

The theme: Love…Actually. The speaker: Pete Ko. The Cook: Uncle Devlin.

Amidst much angst leading up to the camp – with a relatively short preparation period – we arrived on Friday evening in beautiful surrounds and warm hearts. The weather over the weekend was warmer than expected – with most of us able to walk around in shorts and fewer layers than packed!

The timetable this year also seemed more spaced out and less busy – which has been a small distracting point from the last couple of years in which I’ve personally felt like I’ve done so much running around. So even though I ended up playing guitar for each session, this year’s camp stood out most from other camps mostly because of the genuineness of conversations I had during the weekend.

Other highlights included:
– The talks by Pete Ko were insightful and challenging. I’ve been re-listening to them on my MD (as mine was used to record them) and it’s been good to quickly refresh my memory and also to draw out other points I missed whilst taking notes
– Our sister Celz gave an emotional, heartfelt and inspiring testimony. Many were moved to tears, including myself – not solely for the emotions which were displayed, but also because Celz has been one of the most encouraging sisters I’ve known in my time at YF
– The genuine conversations had during the camp and being able to put into practice, quickly, the challenges of Pete’s talks on loving people
– Skit night this year proved of higher quality since I’ve been coming to camp both in message and in humour (though little needs to be said about the quality of Tekkias’ group!)
– The food this year was also exceptionally well done with yummy meals at each turn.

My bible study group was also an interesting mix of people. Most were enthused to be there and I learnt a great deal more about preparation and leading.

So hat’s off to everyone who put in much effort to bring about, what I feel, was one of the best camps I’ve been to so far. I look forward to next year, hopefully, with eager anticipation.
