It was the second hottest day in February this year (the hottest would actually be the day after), but that didn’t stop us working our way through some of Brisbane’s best cafes and loading up on hot caffeinated drinks!

Our first stop: Campos (Sydney site linked), 11 Wandoo Street, New Farm. Buzz was huge when Campos opened up a few years ago, especially as it brought its strong reputation from Sydney.

My double flat-white with nice art, along with my Banana and Chocolate toast with coffee Mascarpone. So dense I could only manage one slice…

Verdict: the food was great, but the coffee was not the best that either I nor Nathan have previously had.

Our second stop: Cup, 85 Russell Street, West End. In what appears to be  a converted garage, Cup is a great place with great people who love their coffee.

Verdict: Excellent. Their blend was strong on the high notes and mid-palate, strong on the spices and  finishing quite uniquely. This place is going to be one I keep coming back to.

Third stop: Blackstar, 44 Thomas Street, West End.

Verdict: Good. For a cafe it offers much better quality coffee than most places, but it couldn’t match Cup’s unique palette filler.

Fourth stop: Veneziano’s First Pour, 369 Montague Road, West End. This place had style and class. The barrista on duty gave training to Nathan while he was in Townsville.

Jia, the barrista on duty, gave us a demonstration on a different coffee extraction method called ChemeX/Chem-X. A lightly roasted bean is put through a canonical filter while near-boiling water is poured through. The result is a highly aromatic (strawberries!) coffee with a strong mid-palette and little to no bitterness. Superb.

Verdict: Excellent. Especially the ChemeX pour. Another place worth returning to.

At this point the trio of the Campbells and Mattias left for one more cafe in Hendra but I opted to head home. So, until next coffee crawl, don’t waste your calories on yucky coffee.
