After a 2month+ holiday over the Christmas/New Year period from Blogging I thought I might have a bit more time to ‘pen’ some thoughts once college started again. However that seems like a remote possibility as my assessment schedule is heavy, to say the least! I’m not the only one in this boat, so (for those who inclined) please pray that myself and my fellow students will get through this semester with our heads still intact!

Here’s what my assessment schedule looks like:

CH624 – Reformation Church History – 3000 words – Due Wk3
How did Calvin regard his views on the way in which we receive the grace of Christ, and also the nature of the Christian life, as differing from those of the Papacy? To what extent did he depend upon, and differ from, earlier Continental Reformers? Discuss with reference to his Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 3, Chs 1-19.

TH603 – Grace and Eschatology – 3000 words – Due Wk5
Evaluate Hans Kung’s thesis in his Justification: The Doctrine of Karl Barth and a Catholic Reflection that there is fundamental conformity between Barth’s Church Dogmatics and traditional Roman Catholic official dogma and the more recent the ‘New Perspective’.

PC647 – Preaching – 2000 words – Due Wk6
Book Review – Graeme Goldsworthy, ‘Preaching the whole Bible as Christian Scripture’

NT635 – Pauline Theology and Romans – 3000 Words – Due Wk7
Exegesis Paper – A paper on a passage within the selected passages in Romans.

OT620 – Pentatuech – 3000 Words – Due Research Wk
3000 word essay on the theology of the Pentateuch

CH624 – Reformation Church History – 3500 words – Due Wk 10 (Ed: I have to choose one of these questions and I’m not sure which one)

  1. To what extent is it possible to draw a sharp contrast between the life and work of the “early Luther” (pre-1525) and the “later Luther” (post-1525)? What points of continuity and discontinuity exist between the early Reformer and the man in his later years?
  2. Which elements of Zwingli’s reforming program essentially died with him, and which ones outlasted his death and became his lasting legacy to the Swiss Reformation? What, historically speaking, might explain this state of affairs?
  3. The efforts of the Papacy and its allies (such as the Jesuits) to turn back the tide of Protestantism in the years after the Council of Trent met with great success in some parts of Europe, but mixed or minimal results elsewhere. What historical factors can explain these differences?
  4. Just how “Protestant” or “Roman Catholic” was England during the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I? – How much had the attitudes, beliefs and practices of the nation-at-large been influenced by Protestantism by this point in time? What kinds of evidence and arguments have been used by historians in discussing this question?
  5. Was the “Elizabethan Settlement” ever really settled? Was the religious situation in England stable during for at least part of Elizabeth I’s reign,? Or is it better described as a continuous succession of tensions and conflicts that were always going to explode into Civil War, sooner or later?

NT635 – Pauline Theology and Romans – 1000 words – Due Wk 12
What is the function of Romans 9 and 10 within the letter?

TH603 – Grace and Eschatology – 3000 words – Due Wk12
Evaluate the different theological perspectives on eschatology and their implications for theological constructs of the Christian life.

OT620 – Pentateuch – 1500 words – Due Wk12
Book Review – T. D. Alexander, ‘From Paradise to Promised Land: An Introduction to the Main Themes of the Pentateuch’

Other:
Preaching – Sermon 1 (script) – 1800 words
Peaching – Sermon delivered – 1800 words

At this point I’m reminded of JI Packer’s great words (paraphrased slightly):

We must…turn each truth that we learn about God into matter for meditation before God, leading to prayer and praise to God.
