Last night was a night I shall not soon forget. Tommy Emmanuel was in town, or at least on the Gold Coast, on the last leg of his Australian tour to promote his new album ‘Endless Road’ with guest Collin Cottrel.

It was amazing! I could not believe some of the sounds produced by the guitars of Tommy and Collin. There was a wonderful mix of old and new (sometimes more recently written than their latest albums) and also a nice mix of soft and slow to upbeat and loud.

Even watching the guys tune their guitars was a pleasure…ok, not so much as hearing them play their actual tunes, but a pleasure nonetheless :)

Some highlights:

– Tall Fiddler: Tommy played this song sooooo much faster than what you hear on his CD

– Initiation: I was staggered at the sounds that were produced by Tommy’s guitar. Obviously there was amplification and what not, but my goodness – he managed to make the sounds of waves crashing on the shore…on his guitar!!!

– Mombassa: a guitar lesson for us all – 7 fret stretch

– Collin Cotterell: spanking his plank…wow :)

– Tommy’s stories: he is quite a cheeky character, and his stories reflect that. So does his playing style and enthusiasm.

– Tommy’s Drums: after playing Mombassa Tommy went into a frenzy playing his guitar like a bongo set, and also grabbing a brush and whacking the body of his guitar with wreckless abandon. His guitars must take such a pounding…

Ahh…there will be so many good memories of that night :)
