From David E. Garland’s NIV Application Commentary on Colossians, pg 273-274
The Colossians speech is to be salty. In our idiom, salty language is something replete with profanities, but obviously this is not Paul’s meaning. “Seasoned with salt” was used to refer to witty, amusing, clever, humourous speech. Their saltiness will prevent them from being ignored as irrelevant bores.
