The Idolatrous religion of ‘Conscience’
If you haven’t heard, the Lutheran church in America has gone the path of the Episcopal and other liberal churches – they have normalized homosexuality. Al Mohler, in his characteristically insightful manner, offers some thoughts on the recent decision – with particular regard for this nonsense about the churches being ‘bound by conscience’. Interestingly enough John Piper offered these thoughts after a freak tornado hit the building the Lutherans were meeting in when they were making the decision regarding homosexuality and their church.
I recently came across this wonderful new blog from three ‘ministry wives’. I highly recommend it for thoughtful, concise and biblically feminine perspective on things. Definitely one to add to your RSS feed.
Jean Williams from The Sola Panel has some very helpful things for us to consider in regards to the spirit realm and our response to it. I wonder how much of a problem this is for Chinese churches?
A remarkable thing happened recently in the US – a documentary was screened in cinemas following Christopher Hitchens (one of the breeds of the ‘new Atheist’ along with Richard Dawkins) and Doug Wilson (Pastor and faculty member of New Saint Andrews College) as they debated each other (in pubs?) across the country. 9 Marks’ Michael Mckinley shares some interesting excerpts from a recent interview with Hitchens on Wilson. I especially thought Hitchens assessment of liberal Christianity insightful:
[Wilson] doesn’t waffle when asked why God allows so much evil and suffering—of course he “allows” it since it is the inescapable state of rebellious sinners. I much prefer this sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions and who look upon faith as just another word for community organizing.
Bill Mounce at Koinonia sheds some light on the translation procedure of the ESV – and in particular regard to Romans 2:27, 29. The ESV translates the word γαμματος as ‘written code’ in one verse and ‘letter’ in the other. Is this a contradiction in the translation philosophy of translating the same word the same way in the same context? Not according to Mounce – and his explanation should give us further confidence the task of bible translation is taken seriously and our English bibles are trustworthy.
Stephen Altrogge provides a fair critique of the story of a man who decided that he and his family would reduce their carbon footprint to zero for a year. Take your time to read the comments section also – a wonderful example of how to respond humbly and fairly to criticism and disagreement.
Here’s an intereting op-ed piece from a Mac user telling Apple that their ‘Mac vs PC’ ads (which, even though I’m a PC user, still love and find funny) have run their course and it’s time to stop being so smug. What do ye Mac users say? :)
