Do you know someone who has a young child? Say ages 4 and up?
To be honest there are not many good children’s bibles out there. The main reason is because whilst many have colourful illustrations and great narration, most fall into the troublesome theological blunder of ‘moralism’ – see the character in the story, follow their good behaviour (be like Noah – listen to the Lord; be like David – have courage to defeat your Goliath’s; don’t be like Jonah – obey God’s commands…etc).
Many children’s bibles fail to take into consideration the ‘big picture’ – how everything in the Bible points ahead of itself – towards Jesus Christ. Now I understand that ‘Biblical Theology’ (as it is commonly known) is a difficult thing to wrap your head around for an adult, so imagine the difficulty it would be for an adult to translate biblical theology for children… is this too difficult a task to undertake?
Not for Sally Lloyd-Jones (related to Martyn?). She has written a superb children’s bible – the narration is brilliant. And even better she has managed to not fall into the traps as most other children’s bibles, but has managed insightful pointers and connections from Old Testament to New.
The illustrations by Jago are also bright, colourful and appealing.
But I think one of the best features of this bible is that not only will it serve generations of young children – helping them to connect the Old and New Testaments together – but I think it will help a number of parents and adults as they read and share God’s unfolding story with their kids. And, prayerfully, families will unite together to praise our wonderful and awesome God for His mighty deeds in Jesus :)
