It was during a very sweet version of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ that Tommy Emmanuel succeeded in making me feel like I was 7 years old and watching the ‘Wizard of Oz’ for the first time.

Saturday night was another chance to see Australia’s premier guitar player in action, Tommy Emmanuel CGP (certified guitar player) Blanka and I made the trip out to Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre, with a slight detour along the way (I missed the exit to head onto the Warrigo Hwy…so we decided to go along the Cunningham Hwy and realised that Warrick was a bit further south than Toowoomba.

But our short detour aside we managed to find the place, and even stop by Maccas for dinner.

Our seating for the night was also a fun adventure. Finding our way to row ‘B’, 4th from the front, we sat down in our seats which were pretty much directly in front of the stage. Feeling pretty good about the seating arrangement I proceeded to take a quick photo of the guitars that Tommy had on stage.

At about this time an usher came up to Blanka and I and we were told that we were in the wrong seats…our seats were actually two more rows in front! Score!

Anyway, Tommy came out and displayed his usual brilliance. I was in awe and briefly thought to myself, “If I’m this much in awe of Tommy Emmanuel…how much more so would I be in awe of Jesus?” An interesting thought :)

Highlights of the night:

  • Heartbreak Hotel – I couldn’t believe how much bass and grunt Tommy got out of his guitar, slapping and strumming the guitar with reckless abandon
  • Mombassa – another drum fest on the guitar…brilliant!
  • Initiation – becoming one of my favourite songs, Tommy had controlled feedback going strong and it just sounded spectacular
  • Shaking hands with the man himself – and asking if he was coming to Brisbane (in Oct apparently), and also thanking him for making me feel 7 years old all over again

Ahh…music is a wonderfully good creation :)
