Monday night brought about the end of Milly Edwards’ run on Australian Idol. I personally thought she was ok, nothing too outstanding but given that she’s only 17 she held up well under the pressure.

Big Band theme always brings my attention in the competition and this year was no different. I was generally disappointed with the showing of most people that evening, but Milly’s song really stuck out – and not entirely in a positive way.

Singing ‘Get Happy’ by Judy Garland I wondered whether or not young Milly really understood the consequences of that great and terrible day when Jesus will return. I don’t know if Milly is a Christian or not and therefore can’t really say if really knew what she was singing about.

The lyrics for the song look a little something like this:

Forget your troubles c’mon get happy,
you better chase all your cares away.
Shout hallelujah c’mon get happy
get ready for the judgement day.
The sun is shinin c’mon get happy,
the Lord is waitin to take your hand.
Shout hallelujah c’mon get happy,
we’re going to the promise land
We’re headin across the river to
wash your sins away in the tide.
It’s all so peaceful on the other side.

I think there are two things very wrong with this song. Firstly, how could a non-Christian draw any comfort from this song? When the Lord returns on judgement day and they have not responded appropriately to Jesus then it’s going to be far from a happy experience.
Secondly, the message to chase all our cares away as we await the judgement day is incredibly irresponsible. In response to our calling as Christians we are to live a life worthy of our calling. Our worldly cares are no longer a concern, but we do have a concern for the continued proclamation of the gospel, through evangelism and in our lives.

It was a little ironic at the end of Monday night’s verdict show that Milly would not respond in a happy way when Australia’s judgement fell upon her. How much more worse would God’s judgement be…
