Don’t take my word for it though. 2012 Australian barista champion, Craig Simon, of Veneziano Coffee, and two-time champion David Makin, of Axil Coffee both agree.

Here’s the (un?)startling result.

Without a doubt, if you’re serious about making good coffee at home, you need to invest in a decent manual machine (and aquality blender and lessons from a professional). Of those tested, the Breville’s combination of price and quality was truly stunning, making it the “gold star” selection from all of the machines put through their paces. Simon believes it compares favourably with $20,000 commercial machines.  (Ed – emphasis mine)

Also interesting to note that all the automatic machines performed pretty poorly. What’s even more interesting is that as the automatic machine gets more expensive the quality of the coffee gets progressively worse!

Anyway. My coffee machine’s ‘favourable comparison to a commercial machine’ isn’t something to really boast in. It’s purpose was to share and be shared with. So consider this an open invite to pop around for coffee and catch up over a cup that “I challenge you to go to a cafe and get a better [cup] than that.”

Perhaps we’ll be able to get into greater conversation than just the quality of the coffee as well ;)

Update:

Capsule machines get reviewed here. And they are as bad as you think…
